(99) Yom Tov Glaser

(99) Yom Tov Glaser: "for us all to "accept" someone's essence. The idea being their "essence" is who they truly are. I believe that these days there is a great deal of hatred amongst groups, within communities, and nations. I believe I have heard somewhere that it was "hatred for no reason" that was the cause of the destruction of the 2nd Holy Temple? If one group, community, or nation specifically defines themselves as hating another group, community or nation, then I would think it would be extremely difficult fot the "hated" group, to like the other group. So consider this problem, if group X, exists simply to destroy group Y- (for no particular reason) how can group Y "transcend the natural reciprocal hatred" and not allow themselves simply to hate group X? Setting this up as an equation works"

PHP Tutorial for Beginners | Webmonkey | Wired.com

PHP Tutorial for Beginners | Webmonkey | Wired.com: "The whole deal about making dynamic websites is that you want your web page to be as smart as possible — to have code sitting there that can make all sorts of decisions based on different kinds of user input, user conditions (what browser is Visitor X using?), or information that you set yourself. Examples of this could be:

After a user enters an email address, check that it has a valid form (whoever@wherever.com) and if not, serve a page that says, “hey pal, how about a VALID email address?”
Serve one set of HTML to .com domains and another to .gov domains (where you try not to use any big words that might confuse ‘em).
Know whether a customer at your online store is meeting a minimum dollar amount for an online credit card purchase.
And on and on and on – the possibilities are limitless."

All Victories: The awkward immigrant

All Victories: The awkward immigrant: "but I was too flustered trying to express myself in Hebrew to argue further. I took the apples out of my tote so he could weigh them again.

And then, overwhelmed with frustration and shame and, honestly, no small measure of hormones, I burst into tears.

And that was the worst part, because as embarrassing as it is to burst into tears in American society (I speak from experience), it’s even worse here. Getting emotionally involved in a commercial transaction just seems like the most ridiculously American thing to do. The Israeli way is to get all fired up and insist on one’s rights, and then move on. Crying? Ugh.

But I was crying, and so the vendor said, “No, no, you don’t have to cry. It’s fine. Never mind.”

But I didn’t want to win the argument because I was crying. I was right!

“I’m sure, I’m totally sure,” I said through sniffle-gasps. I opened my wallet ridiculously and pulled out coins. “You gave me this, and this.” As though that proved something. I wanted the floor of the market to swallow me, but instead I gathered my fruit and stamped through the market, sobbing quietly like a champion."

Torah min haShamayim: Conflicts Between Religious Belief and Scientific Thinking | Institute for Jewish Ideas and Ideals

Torah min haShamayim: Conflicts Between Religious Belief and Scientific Thinking | Institute for Jewish Ideas and Ideals: " Association of Orthodox Jewish Scientists was founded to resolve "the apparent points of conflict between scientific theory and Orthodox Judaism."[1] The claims of paleontology, cosmology, and especially evolutionary biology exposed contradictions with traditional beliefs that were hard to overcome-so hard, indeed, that Alvin Radkowsky (an eminent nuclear physicist and leading member of the association) described the challenge as "a test of faith comparable to that faced by the biblical Abraham."[2]"

Vidal of Tolosa - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vidal of Tolosa - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: "Vidal resided in Catalonia, where he prepared his most important work, Maggid Mishneh, a commentary on Maimonides' Mishneh Torah. This work covered the entire contents of the Mishneh Torah, but by 1906 only those parts were extant which cover the following books: iii., iv., v. (ch. i.-ix. only), xi., xii. (ch. i.-iii. only), and xiii. Before the twentieth century, the commentary was never published separately, but only together with the Mishneh Torah (first at Constantinople, 1509). Vidal's second work was a commentary in Arabic on a work by Al-Ghazali that is known in Hebrew as To'elet ha-Higgayon. This commentary was translated into Hebrew by Moses ben Joshua of Narbonne, and as of 1906 was extant in manuscript in the Library of the Vatican. From Joseph Caro's preface to his Kesef Mishneh it appears that Vidal was a personal friend of Nissim of Gerona."

sephardic surnames « Sephardi Tree's Blog: "controversial “Jewish question” regarding its founding in 1596. Vito Alessio Robles, the eminent Saltillo scholar early on stated that “all the citizens of Monterrey descend from Jews.” After a public outcry Alessio Robles had to retract his statement. This book reviews the claim that many of the first settlers of Monterrey were indeed of Jewish descent. The author focuses primarily on the Garza family and establishes beyond a doubt that they were conversos, New Christians from original Jewish families, sometimes labeled Crypto-Jews if they lapsed back to practicing their Jewish faith in secret, the persons pursued by the Inquisition."

revealingthesoul.com » 2012 » March » 15: "The first Hebrew word of the book of Genesis is “Breishis.” It is a composite of two words boro – create and shis which one of its meanings is hole (shitim.) In other words creation comes to us through the metaphor of holes.

The Hebrew name Betzalel means in the shadow of power (God.) (Exodus 35:30) “Betzalel son of Uri (light) son of Chur (hole.)” He was blessed by the Creator to know all the variations of flow in the spiritual realm and thus was able to make a physical tabernacle reflecting all the vibrations of the spiritual realms.

He understood the secret of the Hebrew letters and each detail that they represented. The word for letters in Hebrew is “oss” which also means sign. The Hebrew letters are a sign for something. The shape and form of each Hebrew letter and word reflects the various flows of life force in creation."

Psychiatrist Twerski reflects on reaching 80 - The Wisconsin Jewish Chronicle

Psychiatrist Twerski reflects on reaching 80 - The Wisconsin Jewish Chronicle: "All one book

Although he has written 60 books, he contends that he really only wrote one book 60 different ways.

This particular incarnation of Twerski’s book is not a self-help book for people with mental health problems so much as a collection of reflections on his life and work.

This book targets a Jewish audience, and given the prevalence of Hebrew terms and the lack of a glossary, an Orthodox Jewish one. Unfortunately, the book’s religious tone might limit its appeal to more liberal or secular Jews."

Psychiatrist Twerski reflects on reaching 80 - The Wisconsin Jewish Chronicle: "His latest is “Gevurah: My Life, Our World, and the Adventure of Turning 80” (Shaar Press, 272 pages, $22.99).

In many respects, Twerski’s book asserts the traditional Torah-centered moral values and mentshlikayt (common decency) of the Chassidic masters. But he also tackles the social and spiritual problems of today, along with guidance about raising children in the Internet age, weaving them together seamlessly."

Behind Dimona’s barbed wire, the experts say, Israel has spun nuclear centrifuges virtually identical to Iran’s at Natanz, where Iranian scientists are struggling to enrich uranium. They say Dimona tested the effectiveness of the Stuxnet computer worm, a destructive program that appears to have wiped out roughly a fifth of Iran’s nuclear centrifuges and helped delay, though not destroy"

The Federation suspended its relationship with AJT -- which is independent of the Federation -- until several criteria are met "to ensure no further harm comes to our community."

The criteria include no further columns by Adler following the apology this coming week, appointment of an editor-in-chief to oversee content, convening of an advisory committee of community members and leaders and to provide guidance on any change of control of the AJT, or if there is no new editor-in-chief and advisory committee, Adler selling the AJT.
