Divrei Ben Sira

Divrei Ben Sira: "normal, mundane worldly order. In the search for God, you revert from what attracts you and swim toward that which is difficult. You abandon your comforting and familiar habits with the hope (the mere hope!) that something greater will be offered you in return for what you've given up. Every religion in the world operates on the same common understandings of what it means to be a good disciple-get up early and pray to your God, hone your virtues, be a good neighbor, respect yourself and others, master your cravings. We all agree that it would be easier to sleep in, and many of us do, but for millennia there have been others who choose instead to get up before the sun and wash their faces and go to their prayers. And then fiercely try to hold on to their devotional convictions throughout the lunacy of another day.

YGB - יג"ב: "I came up with “frum week.” For seven days, I would do every Jewish ritual I could think of—big or small, no exceptions—to see whether rituals I had never tried or been mindful of would be meaningful to me.

Frum week required much more diligence and mental exertion than I’d anticipated. I’d thought studying for Organic Chemistry exams was hard, but nothing gets those brain cells firing like trying to figure out how to eat without violating the rules of kashrut."

YGB - יג"ב: "Why? Why do I choose to observe one ritual or commandment and not another?

In college, the why problem magnified. More options for Jewish practice existed than I’d ever realized. And I no longer had to be wedded to practices just because they were “the way I was raised.” How, for example, could I be sure that I was the type of Jew who prayed only on Shabbat, if I’d never tried anything different?"

Torat HaRav Aviner

Torat HaRav Aviner: "Abracadabra
Q: What does abracadabra mean?
A: Nothing. It is a made-up imaginary word. Some says that it comes from the Aramaic: "Avra Ka Davra" – meaning, "It should be created as I said".

Shiduch during Divorce
Q: I am going through a divorce. Can I begin to meet women for a Shiduch?
A: G-d forbid. You must wait until the divorce is completely finalized. In the meantime, the yoke of the Cherem of Rabbenu Gershon (which forbids divorcing a woman against her will) lays upon your neck. Shut Ezrat Cohain #62."

“If you invested in this holding company, which may appear to be a worthy holding company that promises a handsome yield, you have become partners in several hundred of its subsidiaries, which produce its hefty profits. These include the Nesher cement company, which officially operates and manufactures mountains of cement on Shabbat - and even on Yom Kippur, heaven preserve us; the Maman cargo terminal at Ben-Gurion Airport, which operates on Shabbat as if it were a weekday ... Even ‘innocent’ shares such as the Darban land development company owns a mall that operates on Shabbat, and Bank Leumi is a partner in the Fox fashion chain. Even Strauss shares include branches of the Coffee ToGo cafe chain, which operates on Shabbat.”"

SoMeHoW Frum

SoMeHoW Frum: "Some years later one of the Jewish parody recordings saw fit to make fun of the Silent Prayer (Hinneni Heani) offered by the Chazan on the High Holidays before Musaf.

It took a while for me to shake these funny thoughts of cowboys, when Davening every morning. It took some time for me to appreciate the somberness of the Chazan's Tefilah prior to Musaf, without conjuring up images of cows lowing in the fields.

My feeling is that there are certain parts of Judaism, particularly the liturgy that should remain off-limits to parody.

Chabad of Yale Breaks Ground on New Building - News - Chabad Lubavitch World Headquarters: "Chabad at Yale University, including Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal and the university’s Provost, Peter Salovey, participated Sunday, September 20, at the ground-breaking of Chabad’s future home on campus.

The Berger Family building will be the center of the Bender Chabad House’s outreach activities serving Yale’s 2,000 Jewish students - roughly 25% of the total student population.

The $2 million expansion will be more than eight times larger than Chabad’s current home. In addition to a synagogue and library, the new center will include a state-of-the-art kosher kitchen and dining room, a much needed addition. To date, Sara Rosenstein, Chabad representative to Yale with her husband, prepares Shabbat and Holiday meals for as many as 120 students from her home."

The Jewish Standard

The Jewish Standard: "And Moses wrote this Torah, and delivered it to the priests the sons of Levi, who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and to all the elders of Israel.”

What that actually means, “Moses wrote this Torah,” we do not know for certain, but from the context of this week’s parashah we can offer a suggestion: The Torah that Moses wrote is the record of the laws God spoke. In other words, the laws of the Torah are the laws God gave Moses and that Moses gave us.

Those laws are contained in this “Torah of Moses.”

Even though someone else, or maybe a dozen or a hundred dozen someone elses, may have added the narrative portions to the Torah, the laws in this Torah represent the legitimate and revealed word of God, as transmitted to us by Moses.

Thus, the laws we must repent for not observing are the laws of this Torah. It really is as simple as that."

Make day school affordability a priority - The Jewish Standard

Make day school affordability a priority - The Jewish Standard: "NEW YORK – One of the most daunting challenges facing Jewish communities in North America is the high cost of living an Orthodox lifestyle. Particularly in these difficult economic times, when so many are either unemployed or underemployed, the financial demands seem overwhelming.

The No. 1 expense for most traditionally observant families is, of course, tuition. The day school tuition crisis is no longer something that looms on the distant horizon; it has arrived. The Avi Chai Foundation’s most recent census indicates an across-the-board enrollment drop of 3 percent."

Whose Side Are You On Anyway? « Bad for Shidduchim: "Most of the time, a shadchan is particularly invested in one of the parties being set up. They’re not actually setting up pants and skirts. They’re setting up a skirt with their favorite nephew. Or a pair of pants with the neighbor’s aging daughter, lo aleinu.

This manifests especially in the follow-up to the date. The shadchan will call their principal party anxious to hear that it went well. If the principal party is less than enthusiastic, the shadchan won’t push. (S)he’ll apologize instead, and hasten to break the news to the auxiliary party. If the principal party is interested, on the other hand, the shadchan may press a reluctant auxiliary party to try again."

At UN, Netanyahu Cites Rebbe’s Advice - News Briefs - News - Chabad Lubavitch World Headquarters: "SEPTEMBER 23, 2011
Despite the overwhelmingly anti-Israel sentiment that pervaded the U.N. General Assembly today, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended Israel when he chose to preface his address with the advice of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson.

“You will be serving in a house of lies,” Netanyahu said, quoting the Rebbe's words to him in 1984, when Netanyahu met with Rebbe soon after he was appointed Israel’s ambassador to the U.N.

Rav Soloveitchik on Evolution ~ Hirhurim - Musings

Rav Soloveitchik on Evolution ~ Hirhurim - Musings: "Indeed, one of the most annoying scientific facts which the modern homo religiosus encounters and tries vainly to harmonize with his belief is the so-called theory of evolution. In our daily jargon, we call this antinomy "evolution versus creation." The phrase does not exactly reflect the crux of the controversy, for the question does not revolve around divine creation and mechanistic evolution as such. We could find a solution of some kind to this controversy. What in fact is theoretically irreconcilable is the concept of man as the bearer of the divine image with the equalling of man and animal-plant existences. In other words, the ontic autonomy or heteronomy of man is the problem."

Maven Yavin: R' Soloveitchik on Torah and Science

Maven Yavin: R' Soloveitchik on Torah and Science: "It has been noted that R’ Soloveitchik didn't spend much energy addressing the conflicts between Torah and science. For example, his statement regarding evolution is hopelessly vague.

His essay “Catharsis” sheds at least some light on his view of the issue. The essay is based in part on the Midrash that describes the purpose of the Torah as "litzaref," to purge, his creations. RYBS describes this "purging" or "catharsis” as part of a dialectical process:

The Torah wants man, who is bold and adventurous in his quest for opportunities, to act heroically, and at the final moment, when it appears to him that victory is within reach, to stop short turn around and retreat."

Wolfish Musings: The Unchanging Torah and its Changes: "SUNDAY, APRIL 19, 2009
The Unchanging Torah and its Changes
I was at a good friend's son's Bar Mitzvah tonight when another friend of mine told the following joke:

Moses is up on the mountain receiving the Torah. God is dictating the commandments to him and he is faithfully writing them down to disseminate them to the Children of Israel. Then the Lord says:

"THOU SHALT NOT BOIL A KID IN ITS MOTHER'S MILK."

"God," starts Moses, "does that mean that we can't eat milk and meat together?"

'THOU SHALT NOT BOIL A KID IN ITS MOTHER'S MILK," booms the Lord again.

"Lord," asks Moses, "does this mean that we have to have two separate sets of dishes?"

"THOU SHALT NOT BOIL A KID IN ITS MOTHER'S MILK," thunders the Almighty again.

"God," entreats Moses again "does this mean we have to wait six hours after meat before we eat milk again?"

A exasperated voice comes down from the heavens: "DO WHAT YOU WANT!""

9th of Av: the Seer of Lublin’s Yahrzeit « The Wonders of Your Torah

9th of Av: the Seer of Lublin’s Yahrzeit « The Wonders of Your Torah: "he Seer of Lublin, the mentor of almost all the leaders of the major Chasidic dynasties in Poland in the beginning of the 19th century (according to tradition, 120 Chasidic Rebbes were his disciples), was one of those great tzadikim who, like the Lubavitcher Rebbe in our generation, out of infinite love and compassion for the Jewish people, devoted his life, with total self-sacrifice (to the extent of becoming physically ill…), to bringing the Mashiach – now!

In Kabbalah, the passing of a tzadik is understood as the elevation of “feminine waters” (the existential longing of the tzadik‘s soul to leave the confines of the physical body, to return to and become part of God) that arouses from on high the descent of “masculine waters” (God’s arousal, as it were, to impregnate reality with a “new soul” of a great tzadik who will shine “new light” to the world)."

Wolfish Musings: High School Yet Again... One More Fear Of Mine

Wolfish Musings: High School Yet Again... One More Fear Of Mine: "Our son goes to a fairly RW Chareidi, black-hat, white-shirt/dark-pants only school. The high schools that we have looked at are not like that at all - they all encourage their students to go to college, they allow clothing with colors, many of the kids wear kippot s'rugot, many of them have televisions (well, so do many in the current school, even though it's officially highly discouraged), and most of the schools are Zionistic.

Part of the application process for just about every school that we are interested in involves having the principal fill out an evaluation on the student. Now, to be perfectly fair, my son is not the greatest student - when he's not sufficiently interested or challenged. I've found that when he has an interest in the gemara that they are learning, he is usually pretty capable of understanding it. However, if it's not so interesting, then his grades will start to plummet.

On the Main Line: A Messianic prophecy for 1840.

On the Main Line: A Messianic prophecy for 1840.: "Here is a most unusual Messianic prophecy in the name of Rabbi Shimon of Ostropoli, predicting 1840 as the year. As you can see this prophecy, commenting on Numbers 24:24, apparently predicts the French Revolution, some might see Napoleon, and some other stuff, including a free Jewish kingdom in Russia, and finally the Messiah, in the year 1840-41. This was printed in 1829, when "the fulfilment, being fixed for A. M. 5601, occurs in eleven years from this time." The author errs when he writes that Rabbi Shimshon lived 300 years earlier (ca. 1529), as he was killed in 1648."

On the Main Line: When the rabbis became doctors, someone said "This is stupid." part III: " "Rabbi Doctor" phenomenon which arose in the 19th century (actually, at that time it was really more like "Rabbi assuming the title Doctor" phenomenon). Someone is said to have said that "The Jewish people were healthier before the rabbis became doctors." Ironic. I don't know if anyone really said it, but they really say that people said it. Here are parts one and two.

In any case, here is an interesting document from 1839. This is part of a posthumously published article by Peter Beer (1758-1838) in the Algemeine Zeitung des Judentums. Peter Beer of Prague was a teacher, historian and eventually a proponent of Reform. Having living through times of great transition he was in a position to reflect on new trends. In this case, this aged man had noticed that "nowadays" every would-be rabbi simply has to pursue a doctorate in a university."

Wolfish Musings: Today's Lesson: Bride + Makeup = Bad

Wolfish Musings: Today's Lesson: Bride + Makeup = Bad: " the Darchei Rachel seminary in Jerusalem is providing a scholarship of 1000 NIS (about $265) to brides from their seminary who forgo makeup on their wedding day.

The payment comes about as a result of an uptrend of girls who are wearing makeup. The administrators of the school would like to fight this trend and so they are putting this offer out there. It is too soon to judge whether or not the new rule is effective.

There are a few things that I find interesting about this new development:

Firstly, the new rule wasn't promulgated as an outright ban but rather as an incentive"

Menachem Mendel

Menachem Mendel: "The last few weeks have not been helpful for the image of ultra-orthodox in Israel. In Beit Shemesh, some ultra-orthodox have expressed their opposition to the opening of a national-religious school for girls (they also opposed the opening of the parallel school for boys) near their neighborhood through the vile harassment of elementary school girls and their parents that sometimes included the throwing of rocks, garbage, and feces. We used to live close to where the school is located and some of our friends have children attending the school, so this isn’t just a headline.
There have also been a number of attacks on religious book stores near Meah Shearim that weren’t religious enough. For updates on what is happening in Beit Shemesh see this Facebook group. Here is a recent report from this group of what recently happened:"

Jewish Myth, Magic, and Mysticism

Jewish Myth, Magic, and Mysticism: "An interesting thing struck me while we read through the portion, Shoftim. The portion begins by instructing the Israelites to tear the asherot and m'tzavot, sacred trees* and stone pillars associated with pagan (or, more likely, corrupted Israelite) worship. But then Shoftim ends with God instructing the people not to cut down fruit trees during a siege. It made me think of how the idea assigned to the object makes all the difference. After all, trees and rocks remain potent Jewish symbols. Deuteronomy itself refers to God as Tzur, "Rock." and centuries later Proverbs speaks of wisdom** as "a tree of life." The objects don't go away, they just undergo a symbolic transmutation."

Here are three sources later than 1719."

Torah Umadda - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Torah Umadda - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: "As mentioned, based on Rabbi Soloveitchik's teachings, "Madda" entails "worldly involvement" in addition to its intellectual component - and places a high value on contribution to general society. Adherents of Centrist Orthodoxy are thus well represented, proportionately, in the professions and in academia[10] - and to some extent in politics. Members of Haredi communities, by contrast, will typically not undertake any post high school secular education (except for specific exceptions for livelihood purposes), and will, in general, minimise involvement with the secular; see further discussion under Divine Providence."

:::Bnos Leah Prospect Park::ABOUT US::

:::Bnos Leah Prospect Park::ABOUT US::: ". Prospect Park Yeshiva's half-century of education meets the crossroads of technology; enabling all to easily, efficiently and happily reconnect. The Yeshiva is intent on finding every one of our graduates, sharing our stories, our families, and our dreams.

Prospect Park Yeshiva's goal is to "Prospect" the future; to coalesce its strength by "mining" its past. We are determined to "find" every one of our girls and educators via email and fax. We intend to create a virtual community of "Prospectors" – that will be an open, constant source of communication and assistance.

The first step is easy. Please give us your name, and a phone number and address where you can be reached, and include your maiden name and year of graduation -- and if you wish, a line or two about what you are doing. "

Travels Through Time, Space and Beyond - The Scientist and the Rebbe - First Person: " jovial, eighty-year-old, bearded Chabad chassid was once at the forefront of the newly developing National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) program.

“When people ask me how I became an observant Jew, I tell them that I’ll drop them a line when I become one,” Professor Greene says with his trademark smile. “I’m still a work in progress.”

“But aren’t you a chassid?” people ask in surprise.

“But aren’t you a chassid?” people ask in surprise“My wife always says,” the professor answers, “the word ‘chassid’ is like the word ‘intellectual’—someone else has to call you one!”"

The Importance of Getting Middle School Students on the Road to College

The Importance of Getting Middle School Students on the Road to College: "students can be taught that college is one of the most enjoyable experiences a person could have. This could connect with the young children, as the element of fun in school is alien to them. It is true that most college graduates mention college as being one of their more memorable experiences. Teaching the children about what they can gain through a college education in middle school can ingrain this in their minds and it is probable that they will decide to go to college there and then.

Inform

Going to college is an important part of life, but there are many obstacles to overcome before you can reach there. Informing the students about what they would need to do to get to college, slowly and gradually, will help them in their future life as they will not be besieged when the time comes to go to college."

The Importance of Getting Middle School Students on the Road to College

The Importance of Getting Middle School Students on the Road to College: "alarming increase in the number of high school dropouts or students who quit their education after middle school itself. This can be attributed to the fact that the students decide on their own that they do not want to spend a further four to six years getting education.
Leisure is being preferred over education in this day and age and getting the students on the road to college should be done as early as possible.

Here, middle school can play a very important part. Since the students are more likely to accept what is being taught at that age, the significance of higher education should be imparted to them.
There are a few ways in which middle schools can influence their students to make college a goal for the future."

If a person wants to develop a hashkafah, this is the way it must be. A person must be careful to make sure that the great gedolim of the past did not say the opposite.”

Getting Caught in the Theoretical and Breaking Free. « TheWritersCafe.org: "(like some other frum Jews in the area we currently do not watch TV at home) said “Your annoying me”. My mother took that as an insult, asked for Dinah to surrender the remote, and turn off the TV, until Dinah apologized. Now Dinah did not feel like she did anything wrong, so she was upset. I know how my mom felt because Dinah may have used that word with me, in the same context, and it did not exactly give a warm fuzzy feeling. However we have discussed and Dinah knows that she is entitled to speak and express herself. Also it is not like it is exactly an insult, however on the other hand nobody wants to view themselves as a source of annoyance"

Where is G-d? Devarim-Nitzavim 30:11-14 « TheWritersCafe.org: "Do I need to study Torah almost every waking moment?

Will I need to devote a lifetime, sincerely seeking true atonement?

Do I need to help everyone I meet, till I’m nearly going broke?

Do I need to sincerely listen, to everyone even the most jaded folk?

Do I need to risk a fortune and wager everything I own?

Do I need to sell my house and wander forever without a home?

No I tell you it’s not that way; it is so simple yet so true."

The Frisch School - Paramus, New Jersey/NJ - Private School Review

The Frisch School - Paramus, New Jersey/NJ - Private School Review: " Frisch School, as a unique educational institution of Bergen County, is to promote the values and study of the Judaic heritage as defined within the Written Law (Bible) and Oral Law (Talmud). We believe that every human being is created in the image of God, and therefore endowed with inherent worth. Furthermore, the human expression and experience are worthy of study, understanding, and evaluation. We believe that the Jewish People have been selected by God for a way of life which endows them with sanctity. The Jewish people are distinct by virtue of their adherence to both the ethical and ritual precepts of Torah (Jewish Law). It is this distinction which we believe is worthy of promotion and perpetuation"

Finding and Keeping your Bashert by Rabbi Shafier

Finding and Keeping your Bashert by Rabbi Shafier: " If you want your free magnet so you can represent and show everyone you are a frummy, just go to the site and they will hook you up.

Finding and keeping your Bashert: How to avoid the dating game mistakes

Playing Shadchan

When my wife and I were newlyweds, we took up an informal study of marriages. At the time, my parents had a close circle of friends, 8 couples, who got together regularly. After carefully looking at each couple, we both reached the same conclusion: every one of them was mismatched! Had we been the shadchanim, we would not have put any of them together. She was too smart… He was too frum… She was too sophisticated… He was too loud…They just didn’t fit together.
Marriage is not a match of two like individuals"

Basic Jewish Concepts: FrumFind.org » 2010 » March: "It just so happens that my mother was a hidden child in Poland during the holocaust. My mom had some contact with her family however she survived by specifically making it a point not to reveal her Jewish identity to the families where she stayed. The entire family was able to survive World War II, and come to the United States They were not religious when they were in Poland, so naturally they were not religious when they began their life in the United States"
